What is Nature Base Therapy?

Ocean View

How is this different from traditional therapy?

A Holistic Approach

While traditional therapy approaches wellness from a primarily cognitive intervention, Nature Base Therapy addresses multiple pillars of wellness at once (physical with movement, social with group therapies, mental with clinically effective therapeutic practices, & spiritual with the emersion in nature). This approach allows for greater positive associations when we bring the things that trouble us into therapy, giving our brain more positive inputs to rewire the pathways that are no longer serving us.

Why nature? Why groups?

Working with people & evolution

The evidence that being in nature has positive effects on humans' mental & physical health cannot be ignored. There is also the spiritual aspect of being part of & surrounded by something greater than ourselves, which can be an absent element of connection in many of our daily lives. As for the group therapy option, from an evolutionary perspective, humans did not evolve to process emotions on our own. Co-regulation is a major element of our nervous system, & a skill that we don't often consciously engage in. Group therapy creates space for this opportunity, & provides a deeper level of engagement with social elements of vulnerability & the relational rupture/repair cycle.

Who are the therapists?

Kaitlin Petter

I am the owner/operator of Nature Base Therapy, & the primary therapist. I was not satisfied with the results & barriers of traditional therapy or the brick-and-mortar business model, so I decided to create something different that's backed by research. If you'd like more detailed information about me, check out my Psychology Today profile here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/profile/1238063

FAQs

Does Nature Base Therapy have a physical office space?

No. Nature Base Therapy does not have a fixed physical office, which allows us to be more flexible with the communities we serve & our pricing. Our group therapy meetings that take place indoors are held at local spaces in your community, like Legions & Libraries, meaning part of your payment goes directly back to your community.

What happens if it is raining during our outdoor therapy meeting?

Outdoor therapy is weather-dependent, but only if the weather poses unnecessary danger (such as lightning or heavy winds/downpours). For weather that is not so extreme, the natural canopy, an umbrella, & some additional layers are often enough to allow us to move ahead as scheduled. Commitment to the meetings, even when the weather is not perfect, is also valuable for building resilience & trust in our actions. However, if the meeting needs to be rescheduled due to weather, you will not be charged any additional fees for late cancellations.

Can I still do outdoor therapy if I have physical limitations?

Of course! Discuss any physical limitations or barrier concerns you may have with your counsellor during your free consultation & together we will find the programs & locations that are best suited to you.

How do I know if I qualify for sliding scale pricing?

If finances are a possible barrier to you accessing therapy, then you qualify for sliding scale pricing. Ask your counsellor about sliding scale pricing during your free consultation & we will have a candid conversation about how we can make the therapeutic partnership mutually beneficial for everyone involved.
